Preserving the island's natural ecology has always been crucial to its citizens and visitors alike. 1,300 acres of land on the island are under the supervision of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Committee. The island is also home to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge covers more than 5,200 acres and is open to the public.

The island is also home to a few regulation golf courses.

Sanibel Island government is a Mayor form of government. The city is governed by a five member city council including the Mayor.

The Sanibel Police Department is responsible for policing the city.

Sanibel Island also has its own fire district and is served by two separate fire stations.

According to the 2010 census report, the population of Sanibel Island is 6,469 people, an increase of 6.7% since 2000. There are 7,821 total homes with 2,953 occupied by owner.
