Immokalee, like many areas in Southwest Florida, was once inhabited by the Calusa Indians. The first permanent American settlement in Immokalee took place in 1873.

In 1921, the Atlantic Coast Line Railway extended its service and opened a direct overland route for both trade and communication. Already known for its successful ranching industry, Immokalee also brought in oil and lumber industries, and over the next 20 years established the city as a national leader in agriculture and production.

Today, Immokalee still ranks as one of the top agricultural centers in the nation. During the spring of each year, Immokalee is responsible for 90% of the tomatoes in the United States.

The Seminole Indians still have a significant presence in Immokalee with the building of the Seminole Indian Casino. The casino has become a destination for thousands each year.

In recent years, Immokalee has also produced top notch professional athletes including Edgerrin James and Albert Bentley. Both James and Bentley graduated from Immokalee High School, University of Miami, and went on to have successful, professional NFL careers with the Indianapolis Colts.

Immokalee Government

Immokalee is part of the Collier County government. The county government is made up of five County Commissioners. Currently District Five Commissioner James N. Coletta, Jr. oversees the Immokalee area.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for policing Immokalee.

Immokalee has its own Fire District and has three fire stations.

According to the 2010 census report, the population of Immokalee is 24,154 people, an increase of 22.2% since 2000. There are 6,816 total homes with 2,277 occupied by owner.

  • 18.9% African-American
  • 75.6% Hispanic
  • 1.0% American Indian
  • .2% Asian
  • 4.1% reporting two or more races.

The average high temperature in Immokalee is 84. The average low temperature is 62. The warmest months of the year are June, July and August with average high temperatures during the day of 91. The coldest month of the year is January where the average low temperature is 51.
