Everglades City

Just over one square mile, Everglades City is a quaint little town rich in Florida history.

Located at the mouth of the Barron River, on Chokoloskee Bay, Everglades City acts as a welcome center for the Everglades National Park.

The area was inhabited by the Glades culture of Native Americans as early as 500 BC. Thousands of years later, the Calusa Indians had taken over the land just before the arrival of the Europeans to the area.

American settlement began in Everglades City shortly after the Civil War. The first permanent settler was William Smith Allen, who settled in Everglades City in 1873. Twenty years later in 1893, local residents built the first school in Everglades City.

Everglades City was incorporated as a town in 1923, the same year Collier County was created from Lee County. At the time, there were roughly a dozen families living in the city.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Everglades City became nationally known as a center for Marijuana smuggling. During that time, many of the local residents were involved in the operations. The rampant smuggling was abruptly stopped as part of then United States President Ronald Reagan’s War on Drugs.

Today, Everglades City stands as a model of Florida history and culture. Every year thousands come to the city to learn about the rich history and culture of Florida’s Everglades. Everglades City still remains a major hub for the Florida fishing industry.

Everglades City is also home to thousands of visitors each year for the Everglades Seafood Festival.

Everglades City  Government

Naples government is a Mayor form of government. The city government is made up of five council members and a mayor.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for policing the city.

Everglades City is part of the Collier County Fire District and has one fire station.

According to the 2010 census report, the population of Everglades City is 400 people, a decrease of 16.5% since 2000. There are 476 total homes with 137 occupied by owner.
