Englewood is unique, in that it is a community that spans two separate counties. The north portion of Englewood is in Sarasota County. The south portion of the city is located in Charlotte County.
Because of its unique situation, Englewood has its own private utility company, The Englewood Water District. The Sarasota portion of the city also has a special district, the Englewood Community Redevelopment Area (CRA).
Sarasota and Charlotte County also have an inter-local agreement allowing some Charlotte County residents to attend the Englewood Elementary School. Sarasota County students can attend the Middle and High School located in Charlotte County.
Englewood Beach is a popular destination for both residents and tourists. Englewood Beach is located on Manasota Key.
Englewood is also home to Olde Englewood Village, the historic district of the city located in the heart of downtown Englewood.
With its unique variety of shops, galleries, eateries and coffee shops, Olde Englewood Village has become a destination for both residents and visitors. The area also plays host to a number of unique festivals and events.
The Charlotte County portion Englewood is governed by the Charlotte County Government. The county is governed by a five member county commission. Charlotte County District 4 Commissioner Stephen R. Deutsch currently oversees the Charlotte County portion of Englewood.
The Sarasota County portion of Englewood is governed by the Sarasota County Government. The County is governed by a five member county commission. Sarasota County District 5 Commissioner Jon Thaxton currently oversees the Sarasota County portion of Englewood.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for policing the Charlotte County portion of the city. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for policing the Sarasota County portion of the city.
Englewood has its own fire district. There are seven fire stations located in Englewood.
According to the 2010 census report, the population of Englewood is 14,863 people, a decrease of 8.2% since 2000. There are 10,942 total homes with 6,385 occupied by owner.
