Arcadia

Arcadia started as a small settlement named Tater Hill Bluff in the early 1880’s. By 1888, Arcadia had become the county seat for Desoto County. It is the only incorporated community in Desoto County.

Arcadia is known for its rural, old Florida lifestyle. Some call it the place time has forgotten. More than 370 homes and businesses are registered on the National Registery of Historic Places. For those interested in history, Arcadia has one of the most extensive historical museums in the state of Florida.

Located near the Peace River, Arcadia provides nature lovers plenty of opportunities to hike, canoe and enjoy the Florida outdoors.

The city is also filled with cattle ranches and citrus groves, contributing to the state’s high level of both.

The city hosts the annual Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo, which is the longest continuously run rodeo in the nation. It is also attracts thousands of antique buffs each year with its variety of stores and shops.

The area is known to attract fossil hunters, who comb the Peace River finding different prehistoric bones.

Arcadia also has four golf courses and over 50 churches, giving something for everyone who visits or lives in historic Arcadia, Florida.

Arcadia Government

Arcadia’s government is a Mayor form of government. The city is governed by the mayor and a four member city council that includes a Deputy Mayor.

The Arcadia Police Department is responsible for policing the city.

Arcadia has its own Fire District. There are two fire stations located in Arcadia.

Arcadia is part of the Desoto County School District.

Arcadia Demographics

According to the 2010 census report, the population of Arcadia is 7,637 people, an increase of 15.6% since 2000. There are 2,955 total homes with 1,333 occupied by owner.

The racial makeup of Arcadia in 2010 was;

  • 52.9% Non-Hispanic White
  • 25.2% African-American
  • 33.2% Hispanic
  • .5% American Indian
  • 2.6% Asian
  • 3.6% reporting two or more races

The average high temperature in Immokalee is 84. The average low temperature is 60. The warmest months of the year are June, July and August with average high temperatures during the day of 91. The coldest month of the year is January where the average low temperature is 48.
